The newly built fire station at Anse Royale is now operational while the one at Anse Boileau has ceased operations, the Seychelles Fire and Rescue Services Agency (SFRSA) announced this week.

In an interview with the press yesterday, the deputy Chief Fire Officer, Jones Madeleine, laid out the role of the new station and explained why they had decided to close down the one at Anse Boileau.

According to him, the Anse Boileau fire station was opened in 2013 and set as a temporary fire department post.

Mr Madeleine said the reason for the closure was due to the condition of the building whereby it could be a safety hazard for the workers and they were advised by the health department to refurbish the building.

He explained that the cost to refurbish would not be financially smart, and that it would be better to tear down the building and construct anew.

“It is more cost effective and convenient to move our staff and equipment from Anse Boileau to the Anse Royale building,” said the deputy chief.

The station that was located at Anse Boileau was covering most part of south and south-west of Mahé which include Port Glaud, Port Launay, and Sans Soucis, all the way down to Anse Aux Pins. These areas will now be covered by the new Anse Royale station.

It was disclosed to the media that the new station would have three machines, two of which are brand new, and a pick-up truck.

Mr Madeleine said that since the new station is bigger, more workers need to be posted there as those from Anse Boileau are not enough, and recruitment of the necessary staff will take place once the government budget is approved.

“Everyone who were at the old station will be relocated to the new one and that is how it will be operated,” he concluded.
