The International School Seychelles (ISS) marked World Food Day, celebrated on October 16, by donating non-perishable food items to the Red Cross Society of Seychelles in a short ceremony at the school yesterday morning.

The goods, which included canned vegetables, cereals, rice and pastas, were handed over to the Red Cross representatives by the students themselves.

Sixth form student, Alicia Bonnelame, who forms part of the team in charge of the collection, explained that students were asked to contribute by donating food items from their homes and this was done over the course of a few weeks.

“It is a good way to give back to the community by donating food to the less fortunate and over the course of a few weeks we asked students to bring forth food items from their homes, and the response was very positive, with a hefty amount of items which we hope will last for a while,” she said.

When accepting the donation, Red Cross logistics officer, Michel Simeon, thanked the school for the gesture, which he said will help replenish their food store and assist several families in need.

Mr Simeon said the organisation is presently receiving several requests for assistance especially for food items but unfortunately they have provisions to assist ten families.

“It comes at an opportune time to be able to assist those families. As you know we rely a lot on donations from various organisations to assist the vulnerable ones and today’s donation is a big boost for us,” he said.

The Red Cross Society said its aim is to assist twenty-five families, which is around R50,000 worth of goods.

The donation for World Food Day by the ISS was initiated last year and the school plans to maintain it as an annual event.
