Female weightlifter Agricole finishes fourth
Female weightlifter Clementina Agricole took the worst place in the standings – fourth – as she missed out on a medal in the women’s 59kg category yesterday at the 12th African Games in Rabat, Morocco.
With best efforts of 78kg in snatch (fifth) and 95kg in clean and jerk (fourth) inside the Salle Nahda, Agricole was ranked fourth with an Olympic total of 173kg.
The three gold medals went to Nigerian Lawal Folaahade Rafiasu with 93kg in snatch, 117kg in clean and jerk for an Olympic total of 210kg.
Egyptian Basma Ibrahim claimed the three silver medals with lifts of 88kg in snatch, 114kg in clean and jerk for an Olympic total of 202kg, while Tunisian Rahmouni Chaima went home with the three bronze medals with 87kg in snatch, 108kg in clean and jerk for an Olympic total of 195kg.
In volleyball at the Salle Bouazzaoui, Seychelles, who lost their third and final group A match to Botswana on Monday night when they needed a win to progress to the semifinals, are now out of the medal race.
Morocco, Nigeria, Kenya and Cameroon are in the semifinals
Group A winners Morocco face African champions Cameroon, second in group B, in the semifinal today, while group A runners-up Nigeria meet African runner-up Kenya in the other last-four match.
Morocco finished undefeated in three games and won pool A following their victory over Nigeria 3-1 (26-28, 25-18, 25-18, 25-16) on Monday night after Seychelles had let slip a chance to move to the knockout stage when they lost 1-3 (16-25, 25-22, 18-25, 19-25) to Botswana.
This was Seychelles’ second defeat as they lost in straight sets 0-3 (10-25, 19-25, 13-25) to hosts Morocco in their second group A match on Saturday.
Coached by Julien Onezime, the team finished the group stage fourth and last with only two points after downing Nigeria 3-2 (25-23, 18-25, 25-20, 23-25, 15-11) in their first game.
Nigeria finished second with four points despite having the same win-loss ratio – 1-2 – as Botswana and Seychelles. Botswana finished with three points against two for Seychelles.
In the women’s singles of the individual badminton event, Alabi Zainab Damilola of Nigeria beat reigning Sportswoman of the Year Allisen Camille 2-1.
In the women’s high jump last night at the Complexe Sportif Moulay Abdellah, Natacha Chetty cleared the bar at a height of 1.70m to settle for ninth position out of 13 competitors after two others did not start.
The gold medal was won by Ghanaian Amoanimaa Rose Yeboah with a best effort of 1.84m, while Moroccan Siba Rhizlane (runner-up) and Ethiopian Dibow Arijat Ubang (third) had best jumps of 1.81m.
