International day of sport for development and peace – April 6, 2022 |06 April 2022
ISEE brings volleyball coaching and refereeing to inmates
The International day of sport for development and peace is an annual celebration of the power of sport to drive social change, community development and to foster peace and understanding.
It was created by the United Nations General Assembly on August 23, 2013 and supported by the International Olympic Committee since April 6, 2014.
This date commemorates the inauguration, in 1896, of the first Olympic Games of the modern era, in Athens, Greece.
Sports has always been used as a tool to positively enhance social change and community development. This is due to its specific nature being that it encourages people to work together towards a common goal. Moreover it gives people a sense of belonging and purpose.
Social and leadership skills as well as high self-esteem which are positive values inculcated in children and adults while practicing sports contribute to positive transformation in the communities.
The International day of sport for development and peace (IDSDP) is a very important day as people around the world get to celebrate the positive impact of sports and more importantly people in the sports communities get to be appreciated for their hard work in changing the world around them.
Celebrating IDSDP, the Impact Sports Education Entertainment (ISEE) group would like to shed light on one of its latest completed projects which highlighted sports for development efforts.
During the month of November 2021, a group of seven inmates comprising males and females got the chance to follow a volleyball coaching and refereeing course as part of a rehabilitation project.
They learned the fundamentals of coaching a team to refereeing a high level match. The course was facilitated by coach Ruudy Joseph and Seychellois international referee Derrick Andrew.
Earlier this year the participants were presented with their certificates in a small ceremony attended by the facilitators, ISEE members ‒ Stephanie Duval, Amanda Rose, Sheryl Youpa, Alison Hoareau ‒ personnel from the Seychelles Prison Services.
The participants were made aware that they had been very fortunate to have been able to attend such a high level and technical course as many people around the world have limited opportunities to attend such courses.
One participant expressed gratitude to ISEE for coming up with such an initiative which has been a very positive experience for them.
ISEE takes the opportunity to thank the Seychelles Prison Services as well as the two facilitators for a great collaboration in helping to use sports to promote development and spread positivity.
ISEE was formed in June 2021 with the main objective of promoting positivity across all platforms using different means and tools to do so.
The association is still working on its previous cause of raising funds to buy specialised beds for terminally ill patients, a cause you might have heard about last year. The other canoe crossings by Paul D'Offay will take place in the coming months. As for the Mahé Praslin windsurfing crossing, this will take place during the second half of the year. People who would like to donate to the cause can do so through ISEE's bank account.
