President chairs scheduled cabinet meeting |27 August 2021

President Wavel Ramkalawan chaired a scheduled meeting of the cabinet on Wednesday August 25, at which a number of legal and policy memoranda were considered.

Cabinet endorsed proposals to proceed with the ongoing implementation of the National Payment System Modernisation Plan. The aim of the plan is to move from a traditional to a more modern and digitalised financial system.  

Cabinet approved the Seychelles Fintech Strategy.  Fintech relates to technological innovations in financial services. It offers opportunities for Seychelles to accelerate economic growth, promote competition, enhance public service delivery and build resilience to economic and environmental shocks.

Cabinet approved amendments to the Seychelles Qualifications Authority Act (2005) and approved the introduction of the new Seychelles Qualification Authority Act Bill.

Cabinet also approved the Statute Law Revision (Miscellaneous Amendments) (No. 2) Bill, 2021; and the Penal Code (Amendment) Bill, 2021. These included amendments to various legislation as previously approved in principle by the cabinet — the administration of justice; criminal law and procedure; defence, security and public order.

Cabinet was presented with the Tertiary Education Indicator Report for 2020.  The report provides an assessment of the state of the tertiary institutions for the year 2020. Cabinet emphasised the need to review the education system to ensure that learners access quality education, and benefit from sound careers guidance in order to participate fully in the development of the country.

Cabinet was also apprised of the Labour Market Statistics Report: April to June 2021
