Over 2,000 youths registered as first-time voters since 2020

The Electoral Commission of Seychelles (ECS) has confirmed that 2,126 young people – classified as first-time voters – have registered on the electoral register from the 2020 elections up until this year, according to the voters’ register certified on March 31, 2025.

This year alone, up to May 27, 2025, a total of 1,136 first-time voters have completed their registration applications. Of these, 752 registrations have already been published, while the remaining are still being processed by the Electoral Commission of Seychelles (ECS). These transactions will appear in the finalised register of voters.

Chief Registration Officer Sheena Max highlighted ongoing challenges, including difficulties in verifying the residences of new voters.

She noted that a large number of youths remain disinterested in registering, despite a significant promotional campaign in 2024 which cost over R500,000.

She also stated that the ECS relies on limited data from the National Population Database and is unaware of the whereabouts of many young people.
