Sarcopenia

Sarcopenia is a Greek term meaning ‘poverty of the flesh’. It is a degenerative disease which involves the progressive loss of skeletal muscle mass and function and is driven by the ageing process. This loss of muscle mass often leads to diminished strength and decreased activity levels, contributing to mobility issues, osteoporosis (brittle bones), falls and fractures, frailty and loss of physical function.

Sarcopenia can gradually affect your ability to perform simple daily tasks like walking, brushing your hair or getting up from a seated position. Although ageing is a primary risk factor for sarcopenia, other factors like existing medical conditions, physical inactivity, sedentary lifestyles and poor nutrition can also lead to this condition.
