Lecturers and students from the Seychelles Institute of Agriculture and Horticulture, as well as local farmers had the opportunity to learn more about agroecology in a series of workshops held at the institution recently.
Agroecology is an academic discipline that studies ecological processes applied to agricultural production systems. This allows farmers to work with nature and develop their own solutions to problems; this in terms of increasing their yields sustainably using non-bio chemical methods, while reducing environmental impacts through preventing land degradation and restorating of degraded areas.
This initiative was part of a collaborative project involving the Ministry of Agriculture, Climate Change and Environment, AGRISUD International, Local Food Producers’ Association (LFPA), and the Seychelles Institute of Agriculture and Horticulture (SIAH). It aims to promote agroecology practices to minimise pollution and erosion caused by agricultural activities.
