Message by Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism, Sylvestre Radegonde, on the occasion of Europe Day |09 May 2023

‘EU has set a standard for the world to follow’

“On behalf of the government and people of Seychelles, it is with much pleasure that I extend our warmest greetings and heartfelt congratulations to the people of the European Union (EU) on the occasion of Europe Day.

“May 9 is a special day on which we celebrate the peace, unity, and solidarity that the EU has brought to Europe over the past decades. The EU's achievements in promoting democracy, human rights and economic prosperity have been remarkable, and they have set a standard for the world to follow.

“Throughout four decades of friendship and cooperation, the EU has contributed towards democracy, good governance, human rights and the rule of law, and economic and social development in Seychelles.

“Seychelles and the EU are reliable partners, and we look forward to continue to build on this partnership for the advancement of our mutual interests and values. As we face common challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, security threats, which continuously test our resilience and purpose, it is more important than ever that we keep working together in the spirit of cooperation and mutual respect.

“We also recognise our shared commitment to the sustainable development goals (SDG). And it is in this spirit that we call upon the EU to be more forceful in promoting the interests of small island developing states (Sids), especially as it concerns our efforts to seek the universal recognition and adoption of a Multidimensional Vulnerability Index (MVI).

“As a union, built upon the collective principles of diversity, tolerance, respect, and solidarity, the EU has equally been a compelling model for peace and security, and regional and economic integration. In this context, it is our hope that the ties that bind us are further strengthened through the African Union, through regional economic communities such as the Commission de l’Océan Indien (COI), and South-South communities such as the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS). We believe that the EU will continue to be a beacon of hope and inspiration for all who strive for a better world. We wish the European Union continued success and prosperity for the future.”
