UNDP committed to continued support for Seychelles, says resident representative |14 March 2023

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) resident representative for Seychelles and Mauritius, Amanda Serumaga, says UNDP is committed to continuing its support for Seychelles.

She made the reaffirmation at a meeting with the principal secretary for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Vivianne Fock Tave, on March 8 at Maison Quéau de Quinssy.

The UNDP has been a critical partner in supporting Seychelles through collaborative advantage to ensure sustainability and growth, commented Ms Serumaga, noting that a new Country Programme 2024-2028 for Seychelles will be under consideration by the executive board of UNDP in September.

“Seychelles needs to aim at moving beyond the formula of a ‘High-Income’ country through the documentation in the Country Programme. It is an opportunity for us to collectively argue that UNDP needs to put more money in Seychelles,” advised Ms Serumaga.

She also emphasised that Seychelles in collaboration with the UNDP must continue to advocate for the Multidimensional Vulnerability Index. This concept will allow Seychelles a fair chance to access concessional funds to cater for the country’s requirements.

Ambassador Fock Tave thanked UNDP for its commitment for mobilising funds to support the government's development agenda that will benefit the people of Seychelles.

The key strategic areas of cooperation include agriculture, climate change adaptation and mitigation, biodiversity conservation, Blue economy, chemical waste management, and circular economy.

Ms Serumaga also seized the opportunity to introduce new members of her team who will be based in Seychelles.
