Big screen heightens World Cup frenzy

The big screen at the Stad Popiler car park

A large crowd of football fans, mostly in vehicles, converged in the Stad Popiler car park yesterday evening to watch the two World Cup quarter finals – Brazil vs Croatia and Argentina vs The Netherlands.

This was thanks to a big 5x3-metre screen that was officially switched on by Designated Minister Jean François Ferrari in the presence of the principal secretary for Youth and Sports, Ralph Jean-Louis, the chief executive of the Seychelles Infrastructure Agency, Jitesh Shah, and sponsor.

To bring the same atmosphere and excitement to Praslin and La Digue, a 3x2-metre screen has been put up outside the district administration office at Grand Anse (Praslin) and at La Passe (La Digue), opposite the tourism office.

The three big screens is a result of a public private partnership, initiated by President Wavel Ramkalawan. He made the announcement of the three big screens for the three main islands during his press interview on Tuesday.

All those who spoke to Seychelles NATION welcomed the initiative and noted that it was high time that such an attraction, especially for big international events, be installed as a form of entertainment for the public, hence bringing some additional life in Victoria.

They insisted that people should respect the facility and to enjoy their game in peace and to return home safely.

Designated Minister Ferrari said that a decision is yet to be taken on the fate of the three big screen in terms of if they will remain permanently or not in the designated places. The three screens have been installed by the Seychelles Infrastructure Agency.

PS Jean-Louis thanked President Ramkalawan for his initiative and all those who have helped to ensure that the people get to enjoy the rest of the world cup matches in another atmosphere.
