President and Commander-in-Chief of the Seychelles Defence Forces (SDF) Wavel Ramkalawan on Saturday congratulated the Seychelles Coast Guard and the force, after they had successfully intercepted and seized a drug-carrying foreign dhow.

Patrol ship Zoroaster towed the dhow to the Perseverance base on Saturday morning, where President Ramkalawan was attending a ceremony to commemorate the Defence Forces Day 2022 (see main story on page 1).

“Congratulations. At this point, I want to tell all Seychellois that the operation a few days ago was a success, whereby our Coast Guards, together with the Air Force and Special Forces, have intercepted another dhow, and we have all the evidence to show that in this specific operation, they have explored all possibilities to eliminate around 1000 kilogrammes of heroin which was entering our region, and which would have surely hit our streets, and destroyed our people,” President Ramkalawan stated, applauding the forces.

He went on to note that the operation to intercept the dhow was an impressive one, and encouraged the force to keep up the good work.

President Ramkalawan went on to note that the Tenth Amendment, which makes provisions for the military to support the police in their operations are bearing fruits.

“Therefore the amendment to our Constitution to enable our defence forces to collaborate closely with the police is already successful,” he said, also thanking the Commissioner of Police Ted Barbe.
