If you’ve recently started feeling bored and demotivated while washing your hands more often, and you find that the skin on your hands are becoming dry and irritated, you’re not alone.
The good news, as we’ll find out from Maria and John who own a hand-made, artisan soap business in Seychelles, is that we don’t actually have to compromise our health by avoiding hand-washing.
‘Exotic Scents’, the locally-based soap and skincare products business, began operating in 2012; all the products are made using natural, vegetable-based ingredients.
The idea to set up the business came to Maria following her own childhood experience with sensitive skin and a lack of natural skincare products at the time. As she got older, she began researching how to make her own skincare products and went on to pursue an overseas course in this field.
Below, Maria and John share with us the top 5 ways their soaps make hand-washing a practice that is much more fun and exciting, and which will cleverly help us to protect our health and skin at the same time.
- Our soaps are made from natural ingredients such as coconut, olive, sweet almond, jojoba and canola oils, butters such as cocoa and shea, therefore making them very moisturising. Instead of just stripping off all the dirt and leaving your skin dry and itchy, they leave your skin soft and silky.
- With COVID-19 threatening our lives, the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Health Care Agency have continuously spoken about the importance of washing our hands with soap.
- Our soap came out first in the FemBioBiz Acceleration Programme award in 2019 and won the Seychelles Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s (SCCI) ‘Most Innovative Product of the Year’ in January 2020.

- Our designs are attractive, fun, highly scented and they also add to your bathroom decor. Examples include our ocean and floral collections. We have also made mini hand soaps which are ideal for tiny hands to hold with fun shapes making hand washing fun for kids.
During the month of June, we will be releasing our new liquid hand-wash as we have noticed that some people prefer liquid soap over the traditional bar of soap.
- We also have soaps with different additives, botanicals and essential oils for different skin types and skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, oily skin, dry skin, bad odours, problematic skin etc.
Maria takes the opportunity to let members of the public know that Exotic Scents is currently having a promotion until June 31, to encourage people to wash their hands during the global pandemic. Hotels and guest houses can also order their bathroom soaps which can be customised and make in big quantities throughout the year.
