Message from Former President Danny Faure |28 June 2021

Former President Danny Faure
‘Congratulations to Seychelles NATION ‒ you remain our most trusted source of information’
“Congratulations to Seychelles NATION on its 45th anniversary. Its name reflects the fact that it came into existence on the very day that Seychelles became a new independent nation, on June 29, 1976.
“Throughout our three Republics, the Seychelles NATION has remained the vanguard of local news and current affairs, keeping a printed record of our nation’s progress and development. Initially, it was the sole daily print newspaper. Readers relied on it for all official news and announcements.
“A national daily newspaper remains today an important asset in the development of our country. Seychelles NATION keeps its readers well informed, not just of the news of the day, but also analysis of current affairs, interviews with key stakeholders and decision makers. It invites citizens to contribute articles for the newspaper, and to express their own views on all issues. Its readers can make informed economic and political decisions. It promotes our Seychellois culture. It keeps us well informed about national and international sports, and almost everything that readers expect to be covered.
“In this way, Seychelles NATION plays a fundamental role in promoting the highest standards of free speech which is so vital to defending liberty, democracy and the protection of human rights.
“In the modern world, news – both local and international – can be accessed through a vast number of sources on the internet. And in addition, there are other competing local daily news outlets. Yet Seychelles NATION remains the most trusted source of information for its thousands of readers.
“The loyalty and credibility that Seychelles NATION has nurtured over the years remains its strongest achievement, and an asset that must be zealously guarded.
“During my terms as Vice-President and President of the Republic, I gave every support to encouraging the growth of Seychelles NATION, and to supporting its team of hardworking journalists.
“We created the National Information Services Agency as an independent institution to manage the Seychelles NATION, and we provided it with the technology to modernise the production and dissemination of the newspaper, and to manage its own finances.
“Unlike other ephemeral sources of news, the Seychelles NATION remains the official and trusted repository of the events and history of our nation over the years.
“Seychelles NATION must continue to promote the highest standards of journalism, focus on comprehensive and authentic reporting, to inform, educate, and entertain its readers, reaching out to Seychellois everywhere, visitors and all those interested in learning about what’s going on in Seychelles.
“Seychelles NATION must not rest on its laurels, because that would be celebrating the past. It should continue to look ahead bravely to the future, because that’s what good journalists are – brave, determined, communicative and always in search of the truth, and remaining in touch with the aspirations of the nation.
“On its 45th anniversary, I take this opportunity to wish the Seychelles NATION and its staff every success for the future.
“Congratulations, and may you lead the way in raising the standards of journalism in our country, and remain the most trusted source of information.”
