Covid-19 update ‘Rate of transmission still high and of concern’ |11 May 2021

The rate of transmission of Covid-19 in the country is still high and is of concern, the Ministry of Health has said.

The ministry made the statement in a press release issued yesterday in which it gives an update of the Covid-19 situation in the country as at May 7, 2021.

The cumulative number of Covid positive cases up to May 7, 2021 is 8172. This includes 524 health care workers.

The number of active cases is 2486 of which 120 are health care workers.

The accompanying graph shows the trend of new cases during the nine days up to May 8. While there was a gradual increase in the first few days of May, there appears to be a flattening on May 7 and 8. Nevertheless, the rate of transmission remains high and is of concern.

64% of all positive cases were close contact to a positive case.

Other groups tested include travellers (GOP holders or returning residents) who were exiting quarantine, health care workers screening for surveillance, travellers testing for exiting Seychelles and admissions to one of Seychelles’ hospital facilities. Of all the cases tested this past week, 15% were suspected cases with one or more symptoms. The others were asymptomatic.

Of all positive cases, 63% had either not been vaccinated at all or received only one dose of either Covishield or Sinopharm.

37% had received both doses of vaccines.

Of the patients requiring hospital admission at the treatment centres, 80% had not been vaccinated and tended to be people with underlying co-morbid conditions.

Almost all the critical and severe cases that require ICU care had not been vaccinated.

To date, none of the persons who died with Covid-19 had been fully vaccinated.

To date, of those who have received both doses of vaccines, 57% have taken Sinopharm and 43% Covishield.

Members of the public experiencing symptoms of Covid-19 are advised to go to special stations at the following centres: Glacis, Baie Lazare & Mont Fleuri.
