La Retraite primary school organised a ceremony yesterday to recognise and reward the pupils who performed very well in their national exams last year.

This prize giving ceremony was held at the school in the presence of the award winners and their parents, the principal secretary for education Dr Odile Decomarmond, the director for Primary Education Cyril Pillay, member of the National Assembly (MNA) for Anse Etoile Georges Romain, the teachers and other distinguished guests.

In her opening remarks, the new head teacher of the school, Jina Ernesta, explained that the school average last year was above the national mean for all subjects except for French, compared to the year 2019 when it was below the national mean for three other subjects.

“Last year’s exam results were outstanding and long awaited. The school managed to record six A*s and 15 A grades,” noted the head teacher.

The recipients of the awards were high achievers Daniel Zialor, Steven Mtiziwa, Micah Renaud, Deedrah Suzette, Natira Rose, Richie Payet and Jaden Adrienne, who each received their prizes and certificates for the respective subjects in which they scored the best results. The best three overall were Richie Payet, Micah Renaud, and the best of the best Daniel Zialor.

Steven Mtiziwa ,who received prizes in several subjects, proposed a vote of thanks on behalf of the students, extending gratitude to all the teachers, staff and parents who have given them the support and guidance they needed to achieve their goals.

PS Decomarmond congratulated the students, teachers and school as a whole for the progress they have made.

“I am sure these results have been a great encouragement for staff, parents and students to continue on this path for improvement. We expect to see even better results this year especially targeting the subject areas where you feel there is a bit more to do. We are here to give you the support that you need to be able to achieve the desired targets,” said the PS.

She also added that the students will need to keep working hard and pushing themselves as secondary school is much more challenging and demanding.

“Now more than ever you need to focus on your studies. There are new subjects, new challenges and a new environment,” she stated.
