Fire under control at the Providence Landfill 2 |16 March 2021

Fire under control at the Providence Landfill 2

A fire which started at the Landfill 2 at Providence yesterday afternoon has been put under control.

According to the Seychelles Fire and Rescue Services Agency (SFRSA), they were alerted of the fire at 3.22 pm and immediately a fire truck was dispatched.

The public relations officer of SFRSA, Jones Madeleine, noted that “once we arrived there, we realised that the fire was big enough so we called for back-up. We got another bowser immediately and the representatives of the Landscape and Waste Management Agency and STAR were also present to put the fire under control. While we were trying to extinguish the fire with water, STAR was covering it with coral fill and it took us 30 minutes to control the fire”.

Mr Madeleine noted that there was a lack of coral fill and until late in the evening four lorries of 20 tonnes were bringing the coral fill to cover the affected areas. Mr Madeleine believes the hot weather might have been a factor that triggered the fire.

Representatives of the Division of Risk and Disaster Management were also present at the site.
