Perseverance primary gets its very own hall of fame

The four students who have made it to the Hall of Fame at their school

A group of girls who were in P6 at the Perseverance primary school last year have become the first to be inducted in the school’s Hall of Fame.

The inductees, who are now attending secondary school, are Gabriella Havelock who scored best overall nationally for the national exam last year. She was followed by the second best performer, Aurelie Payet.

Odette Lemiel and Juanita Chrisostome, who both scored equal points in their exams, came in third.

Three other girls were also awarded best effort for last year’s exams as they managed to score above 400 points over 600. They are Jaffania Marengo, Shany Thelermont and Eliza Dupres.

The ceremony to honour these students took place yesterday at the Perseverance primary school in the presence of the principal secretary for early childhood, primary and secondary education, Dr Odile De Commarmond; founder of the Hall of Fame project Georgina Dhillon, who was in attendance via skype; director general of primary education, Cyril Pillay; head teacher of the school, Bernadette Maria; the inductees; students; parents; teachers and invited guests.

“We are proud of our pupils who have worked very hard throughout their primary education. Teaching and learning is our number one priority and so we are focused in our students’ attainment,” said the head teacher in her opening address.

She added that education is a shared responsibility and therefore having a collaborative and successful partnership between school and parent plays an important role in helping students achieve their goals and reach their highest potential.

“I would also like to take the opportunity to thank Georgina Dhillon, the initiator of the Hall of Fame, for providing the trophies for the inductees,” she said.

She concluded by saying that there are many more inspiring students at Perseverance primary who are currently performing well in their studies, noting that she strongly believes they will continue with the same level of commitment towards their studies and obtain good results at the end of their primary education.

Mrs Dhillon on her part added that by rewarding a person you give them confidence in themselves and make them feel that it’s worthwhile putting in all that work.

Speaking to Seychelles NATION after the ceremony, Gabriella said that the reason she scored excellent results in her exam was because of her dedication to her studies as she noted that she woke up at 5am every day to study.

“Secondary school is a bit challenging but with hard work I believe that I can score better results,” she said.

Regarding the current group of primary six students about to sit for their exams, Gabriella said that they should study hard and don’t give up on their studies.

Aurelie also echoed the same sentiment as Gabriella when it comes to hard work and perseverance regarding her studies.

“My goal was to be inducted into the Hall of Fame and I was able to achieve it because of the guidance of my teachers and parents and support of my friends,” she said.

She noted that secondary life is a bit competitive but she is still performing well in her studies.

Head teacher Maria said that the Hall of Fame is an encouragement not just for the awardees but for current students as well.

Due to Covid-19 students are a bit behind on their studies but Ms Maria remarked that extra classes are organised every day and parents are kept up to date with their child’s academic performance.

Regarding the ceremony Dr De Commarmond remarked that it was a success especially since this is the first Hall of Fame ceremony for 2020.

She said that because of the pandemic they had to postpone the ceremony for other schools.
