Blue Economy Day celebrated with Facebook live event, logo launch

Presenters of the online event have reached out to the public, informing them on the various aspects of the blue economy

Every July 17 since 2017, the blue economy department has in one way or another commemorated the Blue Economy Day.

This year, the activities for the day went digital to accommodate the new normal with a Facebook Live event which was streamed yesterday morning.

The online event was an opportunity for the department to reach out to the public, informing them on the various aspects of the blue economy and its importance in driving sustainable social and economic growth.

The presenters included the blue economy special adviser in the Vice President’s office Phillip Michaud, staff of the blue economy department and members of the blue economy youth advocacy group.

Viewers were also able to put forward their questions relating to the blue economy to the department’s staff.

The commemoration was highlighted with the official unveiling of the first ever logo for the blue economy by Vice President Vincent Meriton.

The logo depicts the endemic Seychelles Anemone fish in a circle which represents the earth and arrows that indicate the interconnectivity of the circular economy.

Meanwhile, the bubbles represent oxygen needed on earth for life followed by green leaves which depict hope, renewal and revival.

In his message to mark the occasion, VP Meriton noted that Seychelles’ blue economy’s logo would henceforth represent its brand of innovation, resilience, equity and leadership.

“Since 2019 the blue economy department has been tasked with the development of the blue economy brand; it had to focus on core economic drivers for future development and recognising the value of the marine environment as well as its goods and services,” VP Meriton stated.

“It also had to understand the blue economy not only as a sector but also as a platform requiring a paradigm shift in the mindset of all ocean and coastal users,” he added.

He explained that the logo would be used to illustrate Seychelles’ unique blue economy which strives to promote economic growth, environmental sustainability and social inclusion.

Mawess Gabriel, principal information and communication officer in the department of blue economy, expressed her satisfaction at the level of engagement with the public during this half-day digital event.
