Football: Africa Cup of Nations 2019 |22 June 2019
SBC secures rights to broadcast the Afcon 2019, but for Free-to-Air Terrestrial TV only
The SBC is pleased to announce that it has acquired rights to broadcast the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) tournament which will take place in Egypt from June 21 to July 19 2019.
The Afcon is the biennial international men’s football championship organized by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
The tournament will be aired on SBC2 and will include all the matches from the elimination stage up
to the final on July 19.
The SBC has, however, pointed out that the tournament will not be available on its channels on the two local IPTV providers, namely Cable & Wireless’ Cable TV and Intelvision.
The Corporation has explained that the rights that it has acquired are for its exclusive use and that it
does not permit the SBC to relay the matches to third party broadcasters such as Intelvision and Cable
and Wireless.
The Corporation has already informed the two local pay TV providers.
The SBC has been able to acquire this key African tournament for the first time in a very long while, due
to its proactiveness within the African Union of Broadcasters (AUB), of which it is a member.
SBC has also secured these eight additional tournaments which includes the Africa Cup of Nations
for the Under 17, 20 and 23, The Women’s Cup of Nations, the CAF Champions League and
Confederation Cup and a few others.
The SBC encourages viewers who do not yet have SBC’s direct DTT service and who wish to follow
these matches to acquire their Set-Top-Box at the SBC Kanna Mall office in Victoria
