Ex-weightlifter Ian Rose passes away

Ian Rose competing at the 8th IOIG in Seychelles where he won three gold medals

The local sports fraternity has lost another of its local champion after Ian Rose passed away on Thursday April 9, 2020.

Rose made his name in Seychelles’ sport as a weightlifter.

Rose was the winner of the 2016 Weightlifting Open Championship held at the Bel Ombre community centre. Competing in the men’s 69kg category, Rose finished as the winner of the tournament with a total lift of 230kg (100kg in snatch and 130kg in clean & jerk).

At the eighth Indian Ocean Islands Games (IOIG) in Seychelles he won three gold medals in the 69kg category and four years later (in 2015) he captured three bronze medals at the 9th IOIG in Reunion.

Rose then switched from weightlifting to bodybuilding and last year he took part in the inaugural Regis Delorié Classic bodybuilding competition. Although he was well prepared, he finished as runner-up in the senior category to young poser Kevin Domingue who boasted a height and mass advantage which gave him the upper hand.

Rose was 39 years old and was the brother of bodybuilder Ruby Malvina.
