Athletics: Special Events Two competition |20 February 2020

Strongman Dean William takes three wins

Strongman Dean William picked up three wins in Saturday’s Special Events Two competition at Stad Popiler, while Sarah Ethève, Natacha Chetty, Antoine Vargiolu and Joanne Lou-Toy all collected two victories apiece.

A member of the Patriot club, William dominated the male senior discus with a best effort of 40.78m. He also took victory in the male senior hammer throw with a distance of 47.15m and his third win came in the shot putt event with 11.97m.

Two-time gold medallist in long jump and high jump at the 10th Indian Ocean Islands Games last year in Mauritius, Natacha Chetty, who competes in the junior category, was too strong for her younger opponents as she won the long jump with a best leap of 5.11m and the high jump with a height of 1.65m.

Sarah Ethève was unchallenged in the women’s hammer throw and she won with a distance of 13.18m, but the young athlete who competes in the girl (under-16 category) proved to be stronger than the competitors of her age and even older as she dominated the shot putt with 10.85m.

On the tracks, Lou-Toy and Vargliou stamped their authority to win the 60m and 150m races.

In the women’s 60m race, Fast Track’s Lou-Toy stopped the clocked at 7.4 seconds and she registered a time of 18.2 seconds in the 150m race.

As for Port Glaud Shooting Star’s Vargliou, he triumphed in the 60m race in 6.6 seconds and 150m in 16.5 seconds.

In the Special Events competition organised early in the season, athletes compete in shorter distances which they use to fine-tune their techniques before they line up for normal events that feature on the Seychelles Athletics Federation calendar.

The different categories in track and field athletics are colt (under-14 years old), boy and girl (under-under-16 years old), youth (under-18 years old), junior (under-20 years old) and senior (20 years old and over).
