Seed science and planting material security in Seychelles agriculture
Access to reliable, healthy and well-adapted seed and planting material is fundamental to crop production in Seychelles. However, the national context differs from that of larger agricultural economies. Most commercial vegetable seeds used by farmers are imported, and many are hybrid varieties. Because Seychelles has a small market, limited specialised technology and few economies of scale, producing most of these seeds locally is currently neither technically nor commercially feasible. The practical priority is therefore not complete seed self-sufficiency, but a resilient system that assures the quality of imported seed while strengthening the conservation, multiplication and distribution of locally important planting materials.
