Understanding employment contracts and your rights

A contract of employment is more than just a document signed at the start of a job. It sets out the rights, responsibilities, and expectations of both employers and employees. Covering salary, working hours, leave entitlements, and termination conditions, a written contract provides clarity and protection for all parties.

Despite its importance, some workers sign contracts without fully understanding their contents, while some employers fail to meet their legal obligations. To shed light on the matter, Seychelles NATION spoke with Stephanie Boniface, director of Labour Inspectorate within the Ministry of Employment and Human Resource Planning. She explained why written contracts are essential, the protections available under the Employment Act, and what workers should do if they believe their rights are being overlooked.
