Egg prices slide as supply rebounds
After reaching as high as R7 per egg in December, the price of locally produced eggs has dropped to as low as R105 per tray.
While consumers are welcoming the lower prices, some producers are raising concerns about the impact this may have on their businesses. One consumer, who wished to remain anonymous, regularly uses eggs as an ingredient for his baking business, which he established two and a half years ago. The baker, who produces cakes, cookies and other baked goods as his main offerings, said that although the price of eggs has reduced significantly, it has not made a major difference to his business. This is because the prices of other key ingredients remain high or continue to increase.
