The last liberation

 

At last, February 1 as from this year, is a public holiday. Our nation will join a growing global movement that is reminding the world of the inhumanity of slavery.

Better late than never. I cannot comprehend why it took us so long to acknowledge the human rights abuses, which involved kidnapping, dehumanisation and forced labour of millions of Africans. Their families, communities were torn apart. Among the consequences were lasting legacies of systemic racism, economic disparity and social injustice, all persisting today.
