School council chairpersons hold last meeting for the year |18 December 2019
The Minister for Education and Human Resource Development, Jeanne Simeon, conducted the last school council chairpersons’ meeting for this year on Saturday December 14, 2019.
The meeting provided the minister with the opportunity to discuss different aspects of the work of the councils.
Members of the senior management committee made presentations on some of the initiatives that will be introduced in 2020 such as the reviewed Teacher Appraisal Framework, the Teacher Management Policy and provided information on the preparation underway in line with the delineation of responsibilities to be implemented in 2020.
The implementation of a new model of school management as a strategy to provide greater autonomy to schools is one of the aspects of the education reform under the Priority Area: Improving the Governance of Educational Institutions of Education Reform Action Plan 2009 – 2010. This new model of governance of schools in the form of school councils, calls for a greater orientation to a more decentralised operating environment between the ministry headquarters, and leadership/ management at school level.
Minister Simeon expressed her appreciation and thanked all council chairpersons for the work they do and the support they are giving their respective school management teams.
The year 2020 will be a crucial one for the ministry, as it will embark on a new chapter with the devolution of responsibilities to education institutions.
The minister urged all council chairpersons to continue to work together and strive for the betterment of their schools under the banner: ‘Education – A Shared Responsibility’.
