International Nurses Day: A snapshot of the Seychelles nursing sector

Seychelles, like the rest of the world, observed International Nurses Day on May 12, 2025. Nurses, who are the backbone of the healthcare sector, play a multifaceted role in administering direct patient care and medication, and educating patients and families in their collaborative roles.

According to recently published statistics from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), a total of 625 registered nurses were actively practising in 2023. The vast majority, accounting for 84 percent, were Seychellois.

Of the 600 plus nurses, 68 percent were employed in the various public health facilities scattered around the islands, while 32 percent were practising in the growing pool of private healthcare facilities.

Over the years, the Seychelles government, through the health ministry, has implemented various initiatives aimed at increasing interest in the sector.
