Every so often, you might hear a loved one or colleague saying that the doctor has told them they have hypertension (also known as high blood pressure) but that it’s mild and not really a problem. Some even go as far as choosing not to take the medications prescribed. While the latter is discouraged, what makes the situation worse is that most times the same person usually has poor lifestyle choices, be it, in terms of what they choose to eat, lack of exercise, smoking or drinking alcohol. These are commonly known risk factors for hypertension that are often ignored.
Hypertension is known as the silent killer, for good reasons. Most people living with the condition are unaware of it as they do not have any symptoms. This is also the reason why those diagnosed with the condition often feel like they are ‘fine’. The only true way to know your blood pressure reading and whether or not it is within the normal range is to take a blood pressure measurement.
