Man found guilty of human trafficking escapes jail time due to age and illness

A 73-year-old Bangladeshi national, Nizzam Uddin Ahmed, was sentenced for trafficking in persons by the Supreme Court on April 17.

Although he was convicted on six counts of the offence, the court opted not to impose an immediate custodial sentence, due to his age and medical conditions. Mr Ahmed, who has lived in Seychelles since 2014 and was previously operating as an investor, was found guilty of trafficking six Bangladeshi nationals for labour exploitation. He was convicted on November 28, 2024 after pleading not guilty and standing trial.
