LWMA and environment officers learn on fixed-penalty enforcement

Delegates at the workshop

The Land Waste Management Agency (LWMA) in collaboration with the department of Environment yesterday hosted a training to boost their staff’s knowledge on the subject of fixed penalties.

The workshop, held at the Seychelles Trading Company’s (STC) conference room, was one of many sessions that the department of Environment will conduct with other entities and agencies with which they work in close collaboration.

Deputy chief executive of the LWMA, Rahul Mangroo, explained that it is of vital importance that when someone issues a fixed penalty, it is according to proper procedures and that it follows its legal course.

“Over the years, we have seen various new staff that have joined the agency, and also multiple reviews under the Environmental law, and this training is long overdue,” he said, noting that by the end of the training, officers would be able to effectively administer fixed penalties, gather evidence for prosecuting offenses under the law, and understand that the department of Environment is responsible for handling all legal aspects.
