Passing of Namibia’s founding President Sam Nujoma |11 February 2025

United Seychelles leader sends condolences

The leader of the United Seychelles party, Dr Patrick Herminie, has sent a message of condolence to the President of the Republic of Namibia, Nangolo Mbumba, following the passing of Namibia’s founding President Sam Nujoma.

Mr Nujoma passed away on Saturday night following a three-week hospitalisation in the capital, Windhoek, according to the Namibian presidency.

Dr Herminie’s message reads:

“It is with deep sadness that I write to you as leader of the Seychelles’ main opposition party, United Seychelles (US), successor to the Seychelles People's United Party (SPUP), to express our heartfelt condolences on the passing of His Excellency, Dr Sam Nujoma, founding President of the South West African People's Organisation (SWAPO) and the first democratically elected President of the Republic of Namibia. We extend our sincere sympathies to you, the Nujoma family, and the people of Namibia.

“President Nujoma was a dear friend of our own founding President, France Albert Rene. We will always remember with gratitude his generosity in providing office space to our party within SWAPO's offices in Tanzania during our early struggle for independence. This act symbolised the strong bond of solidarity between our parties and laid the foundation for the enduring relationship between our nations.

“The passing of President Nujoma is a profound loss, not only for Namibia but for the entire region. He was a true son of Namibia and a pivotal leader in the Namibian Revolution, whose contributions to his country's liberation and development will never be forgotten.

“Please accept, Your Excellency, the assurances of my highest consideration.”

Dr Patrick Herminie

United Seychelles Party President
