Year 2024 news highlights   |31 December 2024

As we come to the end of 2024, Seychelles NATION presents its readers with a month-by-month summary of some of the local news that have marked this eventful year.

 

January

 

01.01.24: Les Mamelles resident Petulla Volcy gives birth to Seychelles’ sole New Year baby, a boy, at 7.38pm.

 

02.01.24: A new spacious bus shelter funded and built by the G.S Pillay family is officially unveiled at Roche Caiman. The unveiling coincides with the birthday of the late GS Pillay.

The project has been facilitated by the Seychelles Land Transport Agency (SLTA).

 

02.01.24: Noemie Benoit, affectionately called ‘Memer’ by her family, relatives and friends, celebrates her 108th birthday. She is now the oldest person in Seychelles.

 

04.01.24: The Public Utilities Corporation (PUC) announces an increase in water, electricity and sewerage tariffs effective January 15, 2024.

Water and sewage tariffs will increase by 9.2 percent and electricity tariffs will gradually rise to an 8.4 percent by year-end, starting with an overall increase of 60 cents on January 15.

08.01.24: Antoinette Barrack celebrates her 105th birthday at her residence in Cascade where she has been living since 1980, in the presence of her family and friends.

Mrs Barrack is the second oldest citizen in Seychelles, with the first one, Noemie Benoit, 108, also from the same district.
