Bel Eau primary school gets on board nationwide ‘Stop Obesity’ campaign

The Bel Eau primary school is the latest state school to officially kick start its ‘Stop Obesity’ programme, which is part of a nationwide campaign launched by the head of state in October last year to address the pressing issue of obesity in the country.

Pupils and teachers were joined by parents and education ministry representatives yesterday afternoon at the school for the launch of their programme, which included exercise session as well as educational sketch by the children to promote healthy eating and exercising.

When addressing the crowd, the head teacher of Bel Eau primary school, Jane Laurette, explained that the activity was organised by the school’s house masters and it will take place on Tuesdays from 1.30pm to 2.30pm in their 'Wellness and Health' group for Primary 1 to Primary 6 pupils.

It will consist of different physical activities, such as hikes, fitness exercises and gardening, which will be done in rotation.

The different ‘houses’ namely Emerald, Diamond, Pearl and Ruby will receive points and other prizes at the end of each term based on their involvement and number of activities undertaken.

“We are encouraging parents to join us especially in the outdoor events like hikes were we will need extra help with the students,” added Mrs Laurette.

Speaking to Seychelles NATION Mrs Laurette said among the 455 pupils at the school, 25 are categorised as ‘obese’ or ‘overweight’.

“They will have their separate group as we will need to monitor them closely. This includes their food consumption and regular exercise including on Saturdays,” explained Mrs Laurette.

The ceremony ended with an exercise session which was greatly enjoyed by pupils, teachers and parents.
