SCF begins classes for 2024

The Seychelles Chess Federation in collaboration with the Bel Air district administration office has begun classes targeting young children between six and eight years old, as well as all those who wish to learn the game which will help to broaden their mental capacity.

The first session took place last Saturday at the National Library.

Speaking to Sports NATION, chairman of the Seychelles Chess Federation (SCF) Benjamin Hoareau said the aim of such initiative is to provide the young ones with a tool to help them improve academically.

“Basically, we are here to play a role in the community in helping kids to develop and provide them access to a tool which will help them in their studies and everyday life,” said Mr Hoareau who added that the first session went well with 12 participants who began their journey in learning the fundamentals of chess.

He said the kids were very engaging, while their parents showed great support.

Mr Hoareau further added that they are working to host classes in other locations as well, thus providing more access to kids all around the country.

“We are still in talks with other districts to host classes, but here at the National Library is of great advantage as it is in the centre of Victoria, while offering more space, making it very comfortable,” further noted Mr Hoareau

On behalf of the SCF, Mr Hoareau thanked their collaborators who were hands on to materialise the initiative.

“I would like to thank Anne Marie Robert, the head librarian, and the Bel Air district administration who are pushing for more animators to come forward, while we also have all the intention to involve other partners such as the Seychelles Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association (Socga), the National Sports Council (NSC) and anyone who is willing to give a helping hand for the benefit of the kids,” said Mr Hoareau.

For his part, Bel Air district administrator Christopher Madeleine said once approached by Mr  Hoareau with the initiative, they were very  keen in supporting the idea, adding that it is something positive that will help the kids academically, especially those who are struggling with mathematics.

“This is a great thing as it will help them to refrain from social ills and it also provides the opportunity for their parents to have some time outside with them, spending less time in front of the television and game consoles,” said Mr Madeleine who added that chess also helps in improving our children's thinking.

He invited all parents to reach out and bring their kids for the classes.

The classes will take place every Saturday and parents who are interested can reach out to the Bel Air district administration office or the SCF on 2637761.
