Seychelles Schools' Premier League Mahé boys’ champions

Pointe Larue girls, Plaisance boys crowned Seychelles Schools’ Premier League champions

The Seychelles Schools’ Premier League Mahé champions and inner island winners were crowned on Thursday December 14 at Stad Popiler, following two thrilling exhibition matches.

After several months at the top of the table, the boys’ team from Plaisance secondary school and the girls’ Pointe Larue team claimed their trophy after the year-long season of the Schools’ Premier League.

Meanwhile, the La Digue teams, kitted out as Norwich City, and undefeated in the inner islands contest against the Praslin football teams, crossed over to Mahé to collect their trophy.

In a gripping showdown, the boys' team from Plaisance, sporting the colours of Liverpool, faced off against La Digue secondary school in the first exhibition match. Demonstrating their skills on the field, La Digue outplayed Plaisance with a final score of 2-1.

The match between the girls’ La Digue team and Pointe Larue secondary (Everton) team was one to remember. Both teams showcased their strengths, but in the end, Pointe Larue emerged victorious. At the end of normal time and with a score of 1-1, the match went to penalties with Pointe Larue coming out on top with a 3-1 score.

The series of matches marked the conclusion of another exciting season of the Seychelles Schools’ Premier League, which has been running successfully for three years. Supported by the British High Commission, in partnership with the Seychelles Football Federation, the football project now sees the participation of all secondary schools on Mahé, Praslin, and La Digue.

Commenting on the continued growth and success of the football project, British High Commissioner Jeff Glekin said: “The Seychelles Schools’ Premier League is one of the projects which we are most proud of at the British High Commission. It has brought communities, schools, and families together through their shared love of football. It is refreshing to witness the dedication of the teams and coaches in seeing this project through, and even to see the online engagement. Congratulations to the winning teams and all those who performed exceptionally well this year. Now, enjoy your well-deserved rest, and we look forward to seeing the teams back in action for the next season in the new year.”
