The newly renovated Seychelles National Library received multiple donations which varied from books to monetary contributions, as well as IT equipment, in a handing over ceremony at the establishment yesterday morning.
This was in the presence of Designated Minister Jean François Ferrari; the principal secretary for culture, Cecile Kalebi; and some of the thoughtful donors.
The Seychelles National Library received donations from over 25 donors, comprising individuals, local groups, businesses, and embassies who have graciously responded to calls by the head of state and the secretary general of the National Institute for Culture, Heritage and the Arts, to support the National Library as it prepares for its reopening in December. Some of the donors were the ambassador for the Order of Malta, embassy of japan and that of China, the high commissioner of India, the Sea Front Logistics Limited, Cable and Wireless Seychelles, Nouvobanq, Angelique Houareau, Speaker Roger Mancienne, and members of the public, among many others.
To show their utmost gratitude towards the donors, the National Library and culture representatives presented a small token of appreciation to each of the contributors.
Angelique Houareau, a nine-year-old girl from the International School Seychelles, donated a collection of books, which she said will “pique the interest” of anyone who comes across them. “I decided to donate some books because I used to come here when I was little and I wanted to give back to the place I used to visit. And also I want other kids to enjoy it here like I did.”
Angelique, who is awaiting the reopening, encourages people to read as she said it widens one’s knowledge.
In her closing remarks, PS Kalebi expressed her appreciation towards all donors for the over 2000 books and other resources.
“Your donations and support are lending a helping hand to our National Library so it can continuously meet the needs of our community and ensure the development of our youths and the Seychellois people,” said PS Kalebi.
She also revealed the station’s library will resume its service as from mid-December this year.
