The Central Bank of Seychelles (CBS) hosted its board and management retreat as one of the final stages in developing its new Strategic Plan for 2024-2028.

The retreat, held from November 8 to 9, 2023, aimed to provide valuable insights to help finalise a practical five-year Strategic Plan, emphasising governance considerations and fostering discussions.

In her opening remarks, Governor Caroline Abel noted the importance of the strategic planning exercise, especially at this juncture in the evolution of CBS: “As we stand at the cusp of our 45th Anniversary, the theme chosen for our new strategic plan – ‘A progressive central bank: fostering sustainable economic transformation’ – aptly embodies our aspiration as we head towards our Golden Jubilee. The Central Bank is increasingly becoming central to the wider economy, moving beyond the traditional confines of the financial sector.”

Aside from discussions on the strategic plan, the CBS board and management also engaged in productive dialogues on a range of critical topics relevant to CBS, including central bank governance and transparency, the legal framework, risk management and internal audit.

The facilitation of the discussions was done in hybrid mode by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), in response to a request for technical assistance from CBS. The collective expertise for the workshop was drawn from multiple departments of the IMF.

To note that this was the third joint CBS board and management retreat. The first was held in 2018 to formally launch the development of the CBS Strategic Plan 2019-2023, followed by a second joint retreat in 2020.

The CBS Strategic Plan 2024-2028 is expected to be launched on December 1, 2023 during the CBS Anniversary Lecture to commemorate CBS’ 45th Anniversary.
