Memorial service of former principal secretary Marie-Ange Houareau

The memorial service and cremation of former principal secretary for civil Status, Marie-Ange Houareau, was held on Thursday, October 26, at the Padayachy’s Funeral Parlour, Mont Fleuri.

Mrs Houareau passed away in Johannesburg, South Africa on October 9, 2023, following a short illness. Her death occurred few days after that of her husband, Serge Houareau.

Mrs Houareau has occupied various high positions in government starting off as director for human resource for civil aviation from January 1992 to June 1994, human resource manager in the Ministry of Tourism and Transport from July 1994 to April 1997 and director general for administration and finance in the health ministry from May 1997 to March 1998.

She also occupied the post of principal secretary in many fields starting for health in March 1998, social affairs and employment from 2001, internal affairs from July 2004 and lastly the principal secretary for civil status from July 2007 to June 2012.

She worked as consultant within the department of immigration and civil status from April 2012 to December 2013.

Prior to occupying top jobs in government, Mrs Houareau was receptionist at the Seychelles Tourist Office in her early years from 1963 to 1965 and she was also a part-time radio announcer and news reader on Radio Seychelles.

She also did some accounting work from 1967 to 1968, before leaving the country for South Africa with her husband before returning to Seychelles back in the 1990s, to occupy various positions in government.

Mrs Houareau’s funeral service took place along that of her husband.

She is survived by her son Herve, daughter in law Eileen, two grandchildren, one great grandchild and three brothers and three sisters.
