Large crowd brace bad weather for annual cancer beach walk

Different shades of pink were seen on Beau Vallon beach yesterday afternoon with people wearing this colour to show support towards cancer patients.

A large crowd gathered for the annual beach walk organised by the Soroptimist Club of Victoria as one of the activities to mark the cancer awareness month.

The meeting point for the walk which started at 5pm was near the Mahek Restaurant.

‘Support the fighters, admire the survivors, honour those taken’ was the message being passed on by the club.

Speaking to the media after the walk, the president of Soroptimist Club of Victoria, Janick Durup-Bibi, said everything went as planned although the weather was not too favourable earlier and she was happy with the turnout.

“We are all in one way or another being affected by cancer, so let us reflect on our own lives and on those who are battling for theirs. Let us take time to think of the survivors and to support those who need the encouragement,” she added.

Mrs Durup-Bibi thanked everyone who have taken part in the walk and those who are in one way or another supporting the club in all other activities.

Among those present was Miss Regatta 2023, Emmaline Contoret.

“I came to support those who have been affected by breast cancer in one way or another, and to contribute towards creating more awareness,” she said.

Miss Contoret added that it is also important for us to maintain a healthy lifestyle and ensure that our health is our priority.

A group of employees from Gran Kaz also came to show their support.

One of the team members, Marty Letourdie, said the company has decided to take part in the activity as a way of showing its support towards this noble cause.

The club is also organising the traditional ‘Pink Link’ on October 27 at 5pm, in front of the National Museum of History.

For the occasion, the clock tower in Victoria is expected to be lit up in pink.

Another activity will be on October 28, whereby the club members will be in various locations to sell pink ribbons to help raise funds for cancer awareness projects.

The club members will be at various locations such as Orion Mall, Post Office, Market Street, Temooljee’s, STC Hypermarket, Eden Island and Providence.
