No tsunami, reassures Met services   |19 October 2023

The Seychelles National Meteorological Authority has reassured the population that the information in circulation regarding a tsunami was entirely false and there was no cause for alarm.

The agency issued the press communique late yesterday to reassure the public following the spread of the message on social media.

“It has come to our attention that certain misinformation regarding our recent testing of simulation equipment has been circulating among the public, causing unnecessary panic and concern,” read the communique.

“Our recent testing of simulation equipment was a routine procedure conducted to enhance the efficiency and reliability of our services in the region, particularly during times of natural disasters”.

“The intention behind this testing was to ensure that our systems are fully prepared to provide accurate and timely information in the event of any unforeseen weather-related occurrences,” added the statement.

The agency stated that it understands the importance of transparent communication, and apologised for any confusion or distress caused by the dissemination of inaccurate information and urged the public to stay calm and rely only on official updates from the Meteorological Authority for accurate and verified information.

“The well-being and safety of the public are of utmost importance to us, and we are dedicated to upholding the trust and confidence placed in our services.”

It has advised anyone with concerns or queries to contact the chief executive, Vincent Amelie, directly for clarification and reassurance.

The Seychelles Meteorological Authority remains committed to serving the public with integrity and reliability, the communique concluded.
