NBS conducts household budget survey pilot

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) Seychelles would like to inform members of the public that it is conducting a Household Budget Survey (HBS) pilot for one month, from September 2023 until October 2023.

This national survey focuses on household expenditure on goods and services, income and consumption.

It is conducted every five years, and the last one was in 2018.

Information collected from a Household Budget Survey is used to revise the list of goods and services used to compile the monthly Consumer Price Index (CPI) to monitor prices for Inflation, as well as to establish monetary poverty levels among the population.

Additionally, the information collected is used to measure the final expenditure of households, which is a component of calculating Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by expenditure.

The main aim of this pilot is to establish which method the Bureau will adopt for its Main Household Budget Survey in 2024.

One method will require some households to record their daily expenditures and consumption for one month, while the other method will require some households to recall their consumption in the past 7 days.

This pilot survey will be conducted with the participation of 400 randomly selected houses in the districts of Perseverance, Au Cap and Baie Ste Anne Praslin.

The NBS is appealing to household members who are visited to please give their full cooperation to the officers when they visit.

The public is reminded that the information collected will be treated with strict confidentiality and no individual information will be published. The NBS would like to thank all members of the public for their support.

The accompanying photos show how the public can identify the data collectors.
