Fire destroys four-unit house in Grand Anse Mahé |16 August 2023
- No injuries; 30-year-old suspect arrested
The Seychelles Fire and Rescue Services Agency yesterday confirmed that fire destroyed a house in Grand Anse Mahé and partly affected another one adjacent to it, in an incident that was reported on Monday evening.
In a press release issued yesterday the Seychelles Fire and Rescue Services Agency (SFRSA) said the fire was reported a minute before midnight on Monday (11.59pm) and it immediately deployed two fire tenders from the Anse Royale Fire Station and another two, along with a water bowser from the Victoria Fire Station.
A crew of 14 firefighters responded to the incident, and according to the press release, it took them around 15 minutes to reach the scene.
“Upon arrival it was noticed that fire had completely engulfed one of the houses,” it read, adding that it took around 8 minutes to put the fire under control and an hour to completely extinguish it.
“The house was completely destroyed by fire; however, the adjacent one was still intact except for minor damages, mainly to the ceiling, caused by heat from nearby flames and water due to firefighting,” the statement read.
SFRSA said an investigation is under way to determine the cause of the fire in the four-unit house.
Meanwhile, the police issued a communique yesterday afternoon confirming that a 30-year-old man of Copolia was being detained as the main suspect in the incident.
The police said the suspect was a teacher by profession.
The Ministry of Local Government & Community Affairs has also made an appeal to the public to assist the eight persons affected. In a statement on social media the ministry appealed for clothes and other items for the four adults and 4 children – two boys aged 8, two girls aged five months and 8 years old.
