On the occasion of the United Nations International Youth Day, the theme ‘Green Skills for Youth: Towards a Sustainable World’ resonates deeply, particularly in Seychelles, where the delicate balance between its breathtaking natural beauty and the pressing need for environmental preservation is strongly felt. At Absa Seychelles, we wholeheartedly embrace this year's theme, affirming our commitment to nurturing the youth with skills and opportunities essential for spearheading sustainability in our island paradise.

Aligned with this year's core message, Absa Seychelles is fervently engaged in cultivating green stewardship within Seychelles' unique ecological context. Recognising the intersection of innovation and action in driving sustainability on our shores, our dedication is vividly demonstrated through collaborative efforts that resonate with our island's essence, such as the recent memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed with the Ministry of Agriculture, Climate Change and Environment.

At the heart of this collaborative endeavour lies a substantial initiative – the conservation and restoration of mangroves that fringe our coastlines. The pivotal role of mangroves in mitigating climate change, creating habitats for marine life, and safeguarding our vulnerable shores is undeniable. Through the ongoing mangrove conservation initiative, we reinforce our investment not only in the environment but also in the future of Seychelles' youth. This endeavour symbolises our unwavering commitment to fostering a resilient and thriving country for generations to come.

The statistical insights provided by the United Nations highlights the pivotal role of young individuals. With half of the global population below the age of 30 – a figure projected to reach 57% by 2030 – the youth's influence in shaping a sustainable world is undeniable. A promising survey also indicates that 67% of individuals believe in a brighter future, with the highest optimism observed among 15 to 17-year-olds.

In this context, Absa’s digital journey emerges as a formidable force in addressing environmental challenges uniquely tied to Seychelles. Our affiliation with the Absa Group's Sustainability Risk Working Group reflects our commitment to tackle the nuances of environmental sustainability and climate change that impact our island nation. The establishment of a Social, Sustainability, and Ethics Committee within the Group further underscores our collective dedication to sustainability. Our lending practices mirror our steadfast commitment to the Seychelles environment. For instance, in alignment with SDG 7 - "affordable and clean energy" and SDG 13 - "climate action," Absa supports initiatives like alternate power grids, such as solar grids at remarkably favourable terms.

Our role transcends being a mere financial institution; we stand as stewards of Seychelles' environment, enabling change in ways that resonate deeply with our island's natural wealth. This commitment is firmly rooted in our Citizenship pillars of 'Environmental Sustainability' and 'A Just Society.' For example, the integration of solar panels into three of our ATMs in Seychelles not only reduces reliance on grid power but also signifies our transition towards sustainable operations.
