New fire extinguishers to enhance fire safety at Perseverance primary school

The Seychelles Prison Service has donated 16 fire extinguishers to the Perseverance primary school, enhancing the establishment’s safety.

This amazing gesture came about after a father, Ivan Nasibu, who is a fire safety officer at the Seychelles Prison Service (SPS),came to the school on Father's Day and noticed the outdated extinguishers on the premises.

The handover of the equipment yesterday morning was done by Mr Nasibu to the school’s head girl, in the presence of Regina Prosper, the director for health and safety from the Ministry of Education.

In his address during the short ceremony, Fred Azemia, the deputy head teacher of the school, said they were very grateful for the donation.

“Your generosity means everything to us and the community we serve. None of our success would be possible without our generous partners.”

When outlining future plans for the school’s health and safety initiatives, Mr Fred said they will be setting up a committee that will focus mainly on identifying and replacing the old extinguishers at the school.

“For the moment every school is following a programme with the Ministry of Education concerning health and safety, and a selected few from each school will be undergoing trainings. The teams will be trained to handle these equipment. We are currently training ours,” he added.

For her part, Ms Prosper said the ministry welcomes such gestures.

“As the Ministry of Education we are serious about preparing schools with regard to safety and we have been working on an emergency plan, through a series of training, to increase the knowledge and level of safety in schools,” she said.

The Ministry of Education also plans to continue to train two staff members from each school, on the matter of health and safety.
