The Constitution viewed by students |18 June 2023
We all have our views about the Constitution and Seychelles NATION contacted some students to get theirs on the following: What is the Constitution, its importance in life and do you see people around you not following our Constitution? What is your advice to them?
Marion Pointe
“For me, the Constitution is a set of fundamental rules upon which a country is governed. A Constitution is important as it protects the rights of every individual in a country and also explains their obligations.
“In my opinion, I do not think that everyone follows our Constitution. My advice to those individuals is follow and respect our Constitution as each and every one of us are protected by it.”
Gabriella Havelock
“To me, the Constitution is the law that keeps us all in place. It is the way to ensure order, peace and justice in a country. Without the Constitution there would be no order, no equality and no peace. Often, some people do not follow the Constitution. My advice to them is to try to follow it for without it, we will be living like animals.”
Jefferson Isaac
“The Constitution is a set of laws a country is governed on and which protects the citizens of a country. It guarantees and protects our fundamental rights and freedom, ensures fairness and justice.
“My advice to those who don't follow the Constitution is please learn about its importance to uphold every citizen’s rights and ensure adherence for a just and protected society.”
Ishmael
“For me, the Constitution is a set of rules that have been placed together so that everyone has the same rights and if anyone does not follow and respect them, he/she will be punished.
“My advice is that we all need to know the reasons for having a Constitution so that we can get a better understanding of it and why it is so important. Yes, the Constitution is quite important for me because it allows me to speak my mind. I’ve never seen anyone not following the Constitution.”
Alicia Remy
“For me a Constitution is a set of fundamental rules that determine how a country like Seychelles is run. The Constitution is very important to me because it does not only tell me what to do as a person living in Seychelles but also helps me better understand my rights and responsibilities. The Constitution is my pathway to most things, for example if I want to speak freely about a topic.
“To be honest I don’t see a lot of people following the Constitution and if they do they try to undermine the Constitution or twist what ii actually written in it. My advice to them is to read, understand it because it will help them to better understand their responsibilities as citizens and it can always help them in the long run.”
John-Elle Finesse
“The Constitution is a set of laws established to effectively govern the country. The rights of Seychellois citizens based on different factors are prescribed in the Constitution. The Seychellois people know what the Constitution is, they know that it exists and they sometimes quote some articles from the Constitution which I believe most of the time is for them to make a point that will either justify what they want to prove.
“However, I firmly believe that more can be done to educate the people of different ages about the Constitution, the rights and laws prescribed and the responsibilities that go with them.”
