Two new bi-lanes on the way to ease flow of traffic along Mont Fleuri road

Work under way to construct the bi-lanes along Mont Fleuri road

Two new bi-lanes are being constructed along the Mont Fleuri road as part of the second phase of the road improvement project in that district.

Spearheaded by the Seychelles Land Transport Agency (SLTA), the project aims to enhance traffic flow and safety in the area.

The project, which started since the beginning of second week of June, is progressing well.

For several years, Mont Fleuri has been problematic in terms of traffic flow due to it being one of the main routes to town; the district houses numerous schools and work places.

Following a competitive tendering process, FABS CO Construction Ltd was awarded the contract for the second phase, which comes at a cost of R1.955 million.

The work includes lanes on both sides of the road. Facing the north from the Lee Weeling shop to the entrance of the Mont Fleuri state schools and facing the south from the new roundabout to the International School Seychelles.

The new lane towards Mont Fleuri school will be 175 metres long and provide improved access for motorists going to the school.

Additionally, a dedicated lane and drop-off area will be created for the International School, measuring 145 metres in length.

These enhancements aim to significantly improve traffic movement by allowing through-traffic to continue along the main road without being obstructed by vehicles going to the two schools.

While progress is under way, SLTA is currently in the process of negotiating two wayleaves with the Libyan embassy and the International School.

“These negotiations are crucial to the smooth implementation of the project on the International School side. It is hoped that these discussions will be finalised in the coming weeks to prevent any further delays to the project timeline,” said Parinda Herath, chief executive of SLTA.

The first phase of this project included the construction of a roundabout at the Foret Noire junction, resulting in improved traffic circulation at the junction and along the adjoining roads. The civil work cost of the first phase amounted to R1.2 million.

The focus of the second phase is to construct two dedicated turning lanes for Mont Fleuri school and International School. This is a crucial step because the International School drop off and pick up process is the main cause of traffic congestion in the area. The issue has persisted despite various attempts and proposals to resolve it.

Barring any unforeseen obstacles, the road improvement project at Mont Fleuri is expected to be completed by the end of November 2023.

Bi-lanes are also being proposed for the Pointe Larue and Anse Aux Pins school traffic congestion.

The Ministry of Transport and SLTA remain committed to delivering a successful project that will benefit the local community and enhance the overall road network in the area.
