Family fun day rooted in heritage and culture

To commemorate 130 years of operations, Cable & Wireless Seychelles, as part of its anniversary celebrations, hosted a family fun day on Saturday June 3 at the Anse Réunion playing field, La Digue, from 11 in the morning until the evening.

June 3 also marked the occasion of ‘World Bicycle Day’. Bicycles are also a key element of the down to earth nature that La Digue is pleasantly known for, being their primary mode of transport.

It was a day filled with laughter, tradition, and culture. The children were eager to immerse in traditional sports and games organised in collaboration with the National Sports Council (NSC).

Fuelled by the Diguois infusions and snacks, the children were determined to compete in all the games. The highlight for them was the tug of war which became an enthralling fight between the girls and the boys, where the girls emerged victorious.

Led by local Paralympic representatives, there were also sessions of bocce to spread awareness to the youth about the sport and capture their interest at a young age.

Local vendors and businesses had also partnered together to bring some attraction on the day with unique products, including the famous Gato Kreol and Chips Koko, and crafts that were being sold at their stalls. Entities of the Ministry of Health, Red Cross Society of Seychelles, and Sacos were among those present to spread more awareness about health education and insurance needs.

The event concluded on a musical note as there were performances by artists including Diguois as well as Julia and Highness who were there to entertain the crowd. Little ones and their families were dancing and singing along to the music. A moutya dance around the blazing fire was hosted at the end of the evening to ensure that the event closed off with an authentic cultural experience synonymous with La Digue.

“For our 130th anniversary, we have decentralised our initiatives and kicked off our celebrations on our inner islands which form a major part of the community that we serve. With our family fun days, we have found a way to further connect with families and they have had an opportunity to spend some quality time with various activities to enjoy,” stated the chief executive of Cable & Wireless Seychelles, Georges D’offay.
