CBS board gets additional new member |07 June 2023

James Jean is the newest member of the board of directors of the Central Bank of Seychelles (CBS) following his appointment to the post.

The appointment, which is for a period of six years, took effect on Thursday June 1, 2023.

Mr Jean has extensive experience in central banking, having been part of the CBS team from 2008 to 2021.

During his thirteen-year tenure, he has been part of banking supervision and payment systems development and oversight, with his last post being Head of the Financial Inclusion and Market Conduct Division.

He holds an MBA in Banking from the University of London International Programme and a BA Econ (Hons) in Accounting and Finance from the University of Manchester.

He also brings to the board private sector experience gathered over the past two years as manager of two businesses in the agricultural sector and manufacturing industry.

With the appointment of Mr Jean, the composition of the CBS board is as follows: Governor Caroline Abel as chairperson, First Deputy Governor Brian Commettant, Second Deputy Governor Jenifer Sullivan, Frank Ally as ex-officio member, and the members are Professor William Ogara, Bertrand Rassool, Dr Sherley Marie and James Jean.

Of note, Mr Jean is the first board member to be appointed through the process of the new Nomination Committee, a body set up in March 2023 to assist the Governor in identifying and proposing suitable candidates to be recommended to the President for appointment.

The establishment of the Nomination Committee is part of the work being done to enhance the framework for Board Recruitment and bring more transparency to the process.

The Nomination Committee consists of three members who are independent from CBS but with experience of central banking, among other criteria, and is constituted of Jean Weeling-Lee as chairperson, Errol Dias and Vanessa Chang Lam as members.

The current members of the Nomination Committee have been appointed to serve a two-year term, ending in 2025.
