Seychelles and Zambia discuss agricultural opportunities

The meeting between Minister Joubert and HC Kasosa accompanied by their respective delegations

The Zambian high commissioner to Seychelles, Joyce Kapampa Kasosa, paid a courtesy call last week on the Minister for Agriculture, Climate Change & Environment, Flavien Joubert, at the Foreign Affairs headquarters.

During their interventions, Mrs Kapampa Kasosa outlined the status of agriculture in Zambia, a country well known for copper mining and has the appropriate climate to grow and support agro-business, which in return creates career opportunities for its entire community.

She highlighted that there are opportunities in Zambia for potential businesses that are interested in the field of agriculture and reassured the minister that Zambia will collaborate in this sector to ensure food security in Seychelles.

For his part, Minister Joubert mentioned the various targets of his ministry. One, is revitalising the country’s agricultural sector by creating skillful technicians and encouraging farmers to move towards climate-smart technologies and producing a wide variety of yield on a small scale.

Minister Joubert also gave a brief summary on the Seychelles Institute for Agriculture and Horticulture (SIAH), stating that this institution requires skillful individuals to educate the students to a higher level.

Minister Joubert noted that Seychelles is ready to explore possibilities in developing a memorandum of understanding between SIAH and an agriculture institution in Zambia to facilitate the exchanges of experts from this field to support students and lecturers of SIAH.

The delegates concluded their discussions by addressing the status of climate change and environment protection in which both countries have agreed to share experience and knowledge on natural resource management by developing a framework of how to be resilient to the impact of climate change.

The minister was accompanied by his executive director, Catherina Bonnelame, while HC Kasosa was accompanied by her attaché, Kaluwe Wasamunu.
